Flame retardants are compounds added to combustible materials, such as textiles and plastics to render them more resistant to ignition. Flame retardants are necessary to ensure the fire safety of a wide range of materials including plastics, foam, and fibre insulation materials, foams in furniture, floor coverings, upholstery and drapery, mattresses, wood products, and natural and man-made textiles.
